I really have never had any experiences with death other than one of my uncles dying about 6 or 7 years ago. I wasn't really close to him so it didn't really have an impact on me. Other than that, I can't recall any incidents where death has occurred around me.

The only real experiences I've had with death is when I witnessed gang related incident in my old neighborhood when I was about 10 years old. The other would be when my lungs closed on a field trip due to asthma and I had to be rushed to the hospital and revived although I do not really consider it a near death experience.
My name is Emily Lobenstein. I am a Junior Psychology Major. I am taking this course to meet graduation requirements. This was a class that looked interesting to me to fulfill this requirement. I lost my great grandmother about 2 years ago. This was really rough on my mother and grandmother. My grandmother was an only child, so therefore she was the only person taking care of my grandma for awhile. I was really close with my grandma and somedays it still doesn't seem real that she is gone. I've found myself wanting to call her up and talk to her.

I just love that I can remember him in such a positive light, even though family parties will never be the same.

Hello all! I am a little late on this but I am Erik or the loud mouth kid in class that likes to argue with Dr. Kate. I am in this class to not only fulfill my philosophy requirement but also to provide me with some tools when I become a doctor. Death is huge part of medicine that every doctor must death with at one point in their career and the doctor must be educated how to properly deal with those particular situations.
Recently, my uncle died of an aggressive form of ALS, which was a neurodegenerative disease. I watched my uncle go from perfectly healthy to paralyzed to dead in about 6 months. This experience allowed me to understand the difficulties with end of life care and palliative measures.
My name is Davey Beck, I decided to take this class because it seemed intriguing. Three experiences with death in particular have haunted me somewhat. The first would have to be the death of my cousin in the 2007 Omaha mall shooting. When a good friend's cousin was likewise slain at Sandyhook elementary, it really began to haunt my thoughts. The second; my good friend Roy was recently murdered in Jamaica. I was there with Thomas More's JSLP group when he fell victim to a robbery gone wrong; I was just down the road at a bar when it happened, unbeknownst to me at the time. And third, I don't like talking about; my infant cousin's murder at the hands of his father. This was 22 years ago, so I wasn't even born at the time, but the ordeal plagued my family for years and still to this day to some extent... It was arson; he who shall not be named wanted out of the life he'd made and decided that the only way out was to murder his family. His wife and son; my Aunt and cousin/good friend narrowly escaped with their lives, and were permanently disfigured in the blaze. Let's call him... "Michael"... is still on death row, 22 years later.
My names Tyler Smith, I am in this class because I wanted to get a better understanding of death. The concept of death is such a taboo subject in American society today and I wanted to know why that is. I also wanted to see how death is viewed with the same cautiousness in other cultures. The most traumatic experience I have with death is the loss of my sister. In early 2009 she was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. As time progressed it we tried all sorts of treatments and different medicines and at some point we thought that she had beat it. But that glimmer of hope was soon diminished when the cancer became systemic and spread throughout the rest of her body. She eventually succumbed to her cancer and passed on September 12, 2011.
