In chapter 8 it stated "MArx inherited an ideal of human equality and freedom from Christinaity.." This statement stood out alot to me because coming from a Christian home, Christianity was our freedom. Although we have left many churches that didn't treat us fairly, the idea of church and Christianity is supposed to be of equality. When I think of Marx, I think of communism and I have talked about him in my other classes. It has always been a topic that was brought up to the government changes. Obviously I dont believe in his idea of communism and that we should all get the same pay. There are people that work hard for what they get and they should be rewarded for them. I don't believe that people should just be handed things to them. I understand that people do have hard times and fall short and should be lent a helping hand to get back on their feet, but if people are constantly being handed things, then whats the point of working? Who would want to work if they were givin everything?
What I learned from reading Marx was that he saw the driving force of change by material not mental in a social way. " The key to human history, they claimed, lay not in mere ideas, and certainly not in God or spirit, but in economic conditions of life." This was the bases of communist governments. He wanted the working class to start a revolution and make a government with their interest in-mind. I have read his works before in a class at Thomas More with Dr. McNutt. I think were Marx's is wrong is with the working class holding the power in government. I don't agree with the one party government known as communism.
Marx had this idea that we could get tot he point of living in a utopia society where everyone worked for the general good. He was also convinced that he had found the method of steps to go through like the scientific method and look at/find solutions for human society. I though this idea was crazy there are so many factors that are constantly changing with humanity and our society. You cannot predict these things and have clear cut steps to go through and "solve" humanity. He had some interesting ideas that were similar in ways to communism which makes us view him somewhat badly in my opinion.
I had heard about Marx in about every social science course I have taken. Marx is a very prominent figure and left a lasting mark on the world. He is known for his role in communism, which, I believe has good ideas in its roots, but can never be executed properly. The world relies too heavily on the capitalist system and striving to reach the top, to make the most money and be the best at what they do. With communism, that could never happen. To make everyone equal is a good idea in theory, but in reality it is impossible. One cannot "solve" humanity, as Marx desired.
What I had learned from reading Marx was how on target he was in predicting the communist revolutions in places like Russia and China. But also how he talked the unstable nature of capitalism. I have read a lot about Marx especially since being a History major and his name usually comes up a lot. But I always seem to learn something that didn't stick out to me the last time. Like I stated earlier, he was definitely right about the communist revolutions that would happen, but he may more than likely be wrong with a revolution in advanced capitalist societies.
I find it interesting that through reading Marx we can see some of the challenges that people faced during that time period. I have learned about his works a little bit in previous classes. As I recall, we touched on his ideas and works in world civ, reading an excerpt or two, my first year but only briefly. I also remember talking about his life and his relationship to communism at a high school level. Now, after reading about his works I find myself agreeing with a few of his main points. For example, I agree with him that there is no such thing as a fixed nature and that it varies between individuals. I also agree that one can see a transformation of human natures throughout our history. However I do not agree with his point that “everything that we do, including eating and surviving, is socially learned and depend on the society that we live in.” I will admit that environment dose play a big role in our individual natures but it is not the sole contributing factor. This is clearly evident in various twin studies, where two biologically identical people are separated at birth and brought up in different circumstances only to end several years later with strikingly similar personalities and morals. A good example of this are the James twins. Another area were Marx was completely of the mark was his view of the female gender which would be considered barbaric by today’s standards.
Marx has the idea of this "utopian" society, where everyone works for the common good. The problem with this is that not everyone in society can have a job they want. Marx basically states that in a Marxist community the people work because they want to and not for a reward. The problem with this is that people must be motivated to work and improve their social standpoint in the world. What pushes the individual to work hard? Now I will say that some individuals would work hard because they want to do "good" and dont care about the reward. but as a society people must be pushed to further themselves on the social ladder. Science, technology, business are all motivated by a reward, wether it be money, or to just provide a better life for their family.
Right now we can see the marxist principals do not work. Look at welfare, people on welfare get paid to because they don't have a job. What motivated people to work hard if they can get paid to do nothing?? More and more people get on welfare each year and honestly, I don't blame them. Some of them are making 20-30 grand a year to not work. Why should you work?
I have heard and learned all about Marx in a bunch of my classes. What Marx was saying, is that people work because they want to. They don't work for some reward but because they can actually say that they love what they do and helping people out. People mainly work because they want to higher themselves in society.
Do I agree? Absolutely not. People do not just work because they love their job. They work because their is some outcome out of it, usually a paycheck at the end of every week.
I agree with my predecessor in that one of Marx's statement was that people work because they want to, was one of the stranger things stated in the chapter, but at the same time, I both agree and disagree with her opinion on the matter. people, do one occasion work, because they enjoy working, some people enjoy doing physical jobs, because they like physical work. people who like cars are mechanics, people who enjoy helping people get jobs doing such, people who like animals work with animals. sometimes people do legitimately work, because they enjoy working, and getting paid to do what they love is just an awesome bonus. however, this is not always the case, and I do agree most people work because of the benefits, be it money, insurance, or otherwise related.
I heard about Marx a lot in my political science class last semester. Marx is basically trying to get everyone to where the jobs they are in are pretty equal so that people are not just working for the reward but are rather working because they want to. This idea will never work out for society because people need to be rewarded for the work that they are doing or they are not going to have much motivation to do that work. I agree with Erik on his comments on welfare. While i do believe that some people are on welfare because they really can not sustain themselves on their own, i also feel like there are a lot of people who know how to work the system. There are people who are getting paid by the government, don't have a job, and are spending their money on the latest iphone or other things that are not necessities and that a lot of people who actually do have jobs cant even afford.
Marx has to be one of the most famous that we have studied. I have learned about Kant since High School, and when I go into a new course where he is mentioned I learn something new every time. I think that his views on communism are very interesting, and he has very good points as to why it should happen, and gave good reasoning on how it should happen. I think though as humans we want to succeed and have things that others may not be privileged to have because we worked for it. So Marx, unfortunately, communism will not happen...at least any time soon. I think that if the world was different, if perhaps some extreme tragedy were to happen, that it could be possible, but even still as humans we strive to become better.
Through reading Marx I learned that the only way for a society to progress is through class struggle - the rich versus the poor, the proprietors versus the laborers. He claimed that capitalism was flawed at its roots and would eventually bring about the destruction of itself. It would then be replaced by another system known as socialism. In this type of society everyone works towards the good of the many instead of towards good of the few. I've had many exposures to Marx and his theories in almost every social science and history class I've been in. Marx was right that capitalism is a deeply flawed system and there's no denying that it needs work but what he had wrong was that socialism is better system. people are naturally lazy; if you reap the same benefits by doing little to no work at all then whats the point of becoming educated and trying to better yourself?
The main thing I had heard from Marx before reading about him in this class is that he is strongly associated with Communism. He is all about equality and achieving the perfect society. His intent is good but I don't really think that communism can work in the real world because of human greed. Communism works great on paper but if it were to be tried out int the real world it would fail
Marx believed in communism, but in today's society I don't think it would ever work. However, I do agree on his point that people work because of the common good. No one is working because they want to make this place a harder place to live on. The whole idea about welfare that has been discussed in a couple previous posts is completely true. Do I have evidence on it? No, not necessarily but these kinds of people get away with such things every day. Getting paid by the government might be some kind of luxury for some while for others, it's a necessity because they are living literally day to day.
In chapter 8 it stated "MArx inherited an ideal of human equality and freedom from Christinaity.." This statement stood out alot to me because coming from a Christian home, Christianity was our freedom.
